Scholarships Being Awarded for 2009-10
The deadline for applying for EWU/Biology Department scholarships for 2009-10 is February 2. The following scholarships should be available for award:

- Swartz Graduate Biotechnology Fellowship

There was no award for the Spokane Walleye Club in 2008-09, but it is possible there will be an award made for 2009-10.
EWU Biology Department Scholarships
The EWU Biology Department considers undergraduate and graduate student awards a valuable and necessary service provided for our students. For full-time Biology majors, we award or make recommendations for awarding several scholarships. To be considered for one of the following department scholarships, complete the EWU Scholarship Application form available at the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office web site (click on the forms link). Additionally, complete the following requirements for each scholarship you would like to be considered for and submit with your application. You only need to submit ONE application form, but be sure it includes ALL requested information and recommendations as identified below.*For further information, contact:

| Cheney Environmental Association Scholarship (formerly Cheney Recycling Center) | Varies $1,000-$2,100 | Junior or senior Environmental Studies major during the academic year of award (or strong career orientation toward environment). Selection based on combination of scholarship, merit, and financial aid. | Include a letter stating professional goals, why you feel qualified for this scholarship, and other relevant information (department, university, and community activities). Recipient may be required to volunteer 5 hours per quarter at a recycling center during the year of award. |

Minimum 2.7 GPA. Preference given to applicants who are laboratory focused. | J. Herman & Jean Swartz and Frances & William P. Werschler Graduate Fellowship | $2,500 | Student admitted to Biology Graduate Program who will attend classes full-time during award year. Minimum 3.0 cumulative college GPA. Award is presented to Biotechnology students in odd academic years and General Biology in even academic years. | Include a letter addressing: (1) lab, field, or Biology-related research / experience; (2) professional goals; (3) how scholarship will assist in achieving goals; and (4) any other pertinent information. | Spokane Walleye Club Warm Water Fisheries Scholarship | $1,000 | Sophmore, junior, or senior standing during the academic year of the award. Minimum 2.5 GPA. Preference given to Spokane Walleye Club members. | Attach an essay stating professional plans and aspirations in aquatic biology, specifically related to warm water fisheries. Discuss studies/experiences in warm water fisheries. Describe how the scholarship will enable you to better accomplish these goals. Submit 2 professional letters of reference. |
| Safari Club | $2,000 | Junior or senior standing during the academic year of the award. Minimum 3.5 GPA. Biology or Environmental Science major with emphasis on wildlife. Must be a hunter. | Attach an essay stating professional plans and aspirations, accomplishments, hunting experience, why you feel qualified for this scholarship, and any other pertinent information. Submit 1 professional letter of reference. Awardee is expected to attend annual banquet. |
**In addition to completing the EWU Scholarship Application and its stated requirements, to be considered for a specific Biology Department scholarship, follow the requirements exactly as outlined. Be sure essays identify the scholarship/s you are applying for. If applying for multiple scholarships, the same letters of recommendation may be used for the different scholarships as long as they meet the identified requirements. ALL REQUIRED ITEMS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE EWU FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIP OFFICE (SUTTON 102) BY THE DEADLINE IDENTIFIED ON THE APPLICATION (GENERALLY NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 1 FOR THE FOLLOWING ACADEMIC YEAR).

EWU Scholarships
Students applying for the EWU Biology Department scholarships outlined above will also be considered for any Eastern Washington University scholarships for which they qualify. These may include the Powell/Schoffen Scholarship and Wittenbach Trust for health-related majors (undergraduate) or the John Joy Science Award for science-related graduate students. Contact the EWU Financial Aid and Scholarship Office for information on these and other scholarships related to science and health.

The EWU Biology Department provides other awards and fellowship programs that are not tied to the EWU Scholarship Application and its deadline. Note the specific requirements and deadlines identified for each award.

| Turnbull Laboratory for Ecological Studies (TLES) Research Scholars | $2,500 | Junior or Senior Biology major during the academic year of award. Preference given to General Biology, Botany, Zoology, or Environmental Biology options. | By March 1st submit to the Biology Department office (SCI 258) a completed Biology Department Scholarship Application(click on link to open pdf file); attach an essay expressing your ecological interests (terrestrial, aquatic, algae, fungi, plants, vertebrate animals, invertibrate animals, etc.) and past extra-curricular experiences in biology or ecology. Identify career interests/goals following graduation; attach 2 letters of recommendation from EWU Biology faculty; and attach transcripts. Recipients are required to dedicate a minimum of 35 hours toward ecological research at (or based out of) TLES to be completed within Spring, Summer, and/or Fall quarters. Payment is dependent on successful completion of research proposal/execution/presentation of final project. |

The "Center" is located next to SCI 256 and provides information on scholarships available from the EWU Biology Department as well as biology-related scholarships offered by the university and from outside organizations/companies.
