APTP Math Placement Test

The Academic Placement Testing Program (APTP) sponsors the Math Placement Test (MPT) initiated in January 1984 and given at five public universities.  The purpose of the APTP MPT is to place students into an entry level mathematics course at their respective universities.  Note: Eastern does not accept scores from a COMPASS or ASSET Math Placement Test.

Who is NOT required to take the APTP MPT?
Students who satisfied at least one of the exceptions listed below are not required to take the APTP MPT: 1) has a transcript to indicate they earned a minimum grade of 2.0 in Intermediate Algebra or higher level math course from a post-secondary institution.  To view EWU transfer policies click on the link: TRANSFER GUIDE; 2) officially reported their Advanced Placement Calculus AB or BC and/or Statistics Test score of 3 or better;  3) officially reported their minimum score on a qualifying CLEP Course . To view AP Calculus or Statistics & CLEP test score information click on the link:  TRANSFERABLE CREDIT; (4) will enroll in a pre-university basic skills math course, such as MATH 100, 101, 102, 103 or 104.

Note: Students who took the APTP MPT at an earlier session within the last year and offically reported their scores to EWU are not required to retake the test, unless it is to satisfy a math course prerequisite.

Who is REQUIRED to take the APTP MPT?
All Students admitted to Eastern Washington University without an approved direct transfer degree must take the APTP Math Placement Test prior to registering for a math class.

Where are the APTP MPT sessions held on a regular basis?
At EWU the math placement test sessions are scheduled and adminstered to a group limited to 40 examinees who paid the $25 fee.  To view the schedule of test sessions at EWU click on the link: APTP MPT Sessions at EWU.  For directions to a test session at EWU click on link:  DIRECTIONS TO SENIOR HALL in CHENEY

At the University of Washington, Washington State University, Central Washington University, and Western Washington University. To view APTP Math Placement Test Schedules at other universities  click on the corresponding link: APTP MPT at UW; APTP MPT at WSU-Vancouver; APTP MPT at WSU-Pullman; APTP MPT at WSU-Tri Cities; APTP MPT at CWU; and APTP MPT at WWU-Bellingham.

Note: Examinees who take the APTP MPT at a university other than EWU during a non-Statewide Testing Program will need to ask the staff at APTP Office of Educational Assessment (206)543-1790 to mail their official score report to EWU and your home.

Where do I pay the APTP MPT Fee?
At EWU before a test session you are required to pay the $25 math placement test at Student Financial Services Office on the 2nd floor of Sutton Hall .  At the test session you will be required to present your receipt along with your photo-ID card to the APTP MPT proctor who will check-in the examinees.  If you lose your receipt before a test, then you will need to have another one printed at Student Financial Services.
Note: The APTP MPT will only be administered to the first 40 examinees who pre-paid the APTP MPT Fee to EWU.

About the APTP Math Placement Test at EWU?
There are several types of the Mathematics Placement Test that are listed below:
1. INTERMEDIATE (MPI)/ GENERAL (MPG) has 35 questions from the topics of Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Precalculus I (topics from Algebra I & II in the High School). At EWU this test type may place you into Math 100, 103 (default), 104, 114, 105, 115, 200 or 211.

2. ADVANCED Test (MPA)  has 30 questions from the topics of Intermediate Algebra & Precalculus I & II. At EWU this test type may place you into Math 105, 106, 115, 200, 380, or 161.  Placing into MATH 161 meets the Mathematics Reasoning Proficiency Requirement for non-math related majors.  If your score is below 14 on the Advanced Test, then to identify a math course placement you will need to retest or take the Intermediate Test.  Students who took Precalculus and/or Calculus in high school and graduated within the last year may qualify for special placement consideration.  To review this policy, click on the link:  Math 106 or 161 Enrollment Exception Policy.

Before the test session it is important that you decide what APTP MPT test type you will take.  Your decision should be based on your background in mathematics and the math course you plan to take for your major or area of interest. Your math placement test score is based on the number of problems that you answer correctly; it is important, for placement purposes, that you do not guess at the answers. For math course placement cut-off scores click on the link: APTP MPT Cut-Off Scores at EWU

Note: Examinees with a documented disability that requires special testing accommodations will need to make prior arrangements with the EWU Disability Support Services Office at (509) 359-4706 or http://www.ewu.edu/x2336.xml.

APTP MPT Practice Problems & Objectives
It is recommended that you read the test objectives and then without a calculator complete the practice sample problems for your test type. To print a hard copy of the test objectives & sample problems click on the link: Intermediate MPT sample  or Advanced MPT sample.  To view test objectives or practice sample tests on-line click on the link:  MPT Advanced & Intermediate Practice. Also the practice sample problems are available to pick up from the Department of Mathematics Office in Kingston Hall 216.

  • To determine your math course placement:  Find your test type & test score on the APTP MPT Cut-Off Scores at EWUIf your score placed you into several math courses, take the one that will satisfy your general education mathematics requirement.  When in doubt about this, ask your Academic Advisor.  Students who placed into college level math & graduated from high school within the last year, should refer to the Math 106/161 Enrollment Exception Policy for eligibility.
  • Students who took the test during a regularly scheduled testing session and want their test score officially reported to another public university in the State of Washington will need to contact the APTP Office at (206) 543-1790.
