Prerequisites

Physical Therapy Application

1. Qualify and apply for acceptance into the Eastern Washington University Graduate School. Visit the Graduate Studies supplemental application   and the Graduate Studies website.   2. Complete a Baccalaureate Degree at an accredited institution by July 1, of the year you enter the program.
3. Complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) by December 1st of the year you apply.      

4. Complete the courses listed below, designated for the "science major." Please note that courses designated for nursing students, allied health professions students, or courses offered by health, exercise science, or physical education departments, are NOT acceptable in lieu of the science prerequisites for science majors listed below unless specifically designated below.

Please note that some of these courses may require prerequisites prior to admission into the course.  Coursework should be current.  If your prerequisites are more than ten years old, you may have to retake the course to satisfy our prerequisites.


Biology (Zoology) WITH LABS to include:

  • 1 quarter (1 semester) of Human Anatomy
  • 1 quarter (1 semester) of Human Physiology

                 OR

             2 quarters (2 semesters)  of combined Human Anatomy and Physiology

Biology (Zoology)

  • 1 quarter (1 semester) upper division course in (300 level or above) Human or Animal Physiology. - This requirement may be satisfied by a course in Exercise Physiology, offered through an Exercise Science department.
  • 1 quarter (1 semester) advanced course (300 level or above) of your choosing (at least 3 semester credits or 4 quarter credits) in Biology or Zoology.
    Recommended courses include Embryology, Microbiology, Developmental Biology, Cell Biology, and Pathology. (NOTE THAT CLASSES IN BOTANY, FISH AND WILDLIFE BIOLOGY, AND ECOLOGY WILL NOT SATISFY THIS REQUIREMENT.)
Chemistry WITH LABS to include:
  • 3 quarters (2 semesters) of general Chemistry for science majors, not for allied health please see above underlined note under number 4.
Physics WITH LABS to include:
  • 3 quarters (2 semesters) of Physics
Behavioral Science: (NOTE CHANGE effective 7/1/09)
  • Any two courses in behavioral science including psychology, sociology and anthropology.
Statistics:
  • 1 quarter (1 semester) of Statistics any statistics course from any discipline is accepted

Important information to remember when applying to our program:

  • Attain a MINIMUM overall cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 in the last two years of study (90 graded quarter credits) AND a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in the prerequisite courses at the time of application.
  • Complete a MINIMUM of 75 hours of work/observation/volunteer experience under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist, by the date of application.   Participation in at least TWO different TYPES of practice settings (e.g. acute care institutions, rehabilitation centers, pediatric centers, residential facilities, nursing homes, schools, orthopedic outpatient clinics) is required, with a MINIMUM of 30 hours in at least one of these settings. Experience in a variety of settings often enhances the applicant's understanding of the physical therapy profession.
  • Three letters of recommendation; one from each of the following:
    l basic science instructor
    l physical therapist
    l current or former employer                 

The recommendations will be entered on-line through PTCAS.  Interviews are the final stage and an integral part of the application process. Interview invitations are extended only to applicants who demonstrate competitive academic proficiency and satisfactory progress in all other areas of the application.

  • Critical new information: Students entering the DPT Program on or after September 2006 will be required to have laptop computers for classes.
  • Once an applicant has been notified of acceptance into the DPT program, a NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT of $500 will be required to reserve a place in the program. This deposit will be applied to the first quarter's tuition.

    Applications for Admissions to the DPT Program are available on-line through PTCAS.  The supplemental application is available on line through the graduate studies office.
